The Association was formed in 1977 as a not-for-profit organization.

's by-laws (1994) state:Scope
IMRAC's scope shall be:
- business-to-business marketing (i.e. goods and services sold to other businesses rather than for individual or household use).
- marketing activities including: marketing research, planning and strategy, sales force management, distribution, advertising and promotion, pricing, product/service development and customer service.
Aims
The aims of IMRAC will be:
- to provide education and professional development for its members in business-to-business marketing techniques via meetings, seminars and publications.
- to act as a forum for networking among members, both at meetings/seminars and via publications e.g. newsletter, Membership Directory and now through an Association web page.
- to disseminate information about sources of marketing information and business-to-business marketing techniques, both to members and those outside the organization.
- to represent the interests of members with other related organizations and when appropriate, with governments, trade associations, educational institutions, etc.
- to encourage the growth and development of the professions of marketing and research in the business-to-business sector.
Who is served:
Membership is open to those interested in and likely to make a contribution to any aspect of business-to-business marketing and research including students enrolled full-time in relevant courses in a Canadian University or Community College. Most are either marketing or sales executives, or marketing research or management and marketing consultants. Meetings are open to both members and non-members, as are seminars and conferences. The newsletter and Membership Directory are available to members only. We reach a wider audience through our publicity efforts, which include sending write-ups of our meetings to a variety of publications serving the business community.

- For the opportunity to network with others in the field at meetings, seminars and conferences as well as by letter and telephone using the Directory as a point of contact.
- To receive the newsletter and the information it contains.
- To receive reduced rates for meetings, conferences, seminars and publications
- To hear the presentations at the meetings/seminars, to discuss the ideas presented with other professionals and to ask questions related to the presentations.
