ExpoWorld.net Link Exchange Outgrows 100 sites

This month marks ExpoWorld.net's 6 month anniversary online and
it is also the first time we have been able to ascertain a total
number of websites linking to ExpoWorld.net in excess of 100.
This is a rather large number of links given our relatively
short period online. A mature metasite such as FreightWorld
in the transportation industry (online for 2-3 years now) is
linked by 500+ other sites on the web. At this point, it would
seem that ExpoWorld.net is well on course to reaching such a
level of 'link success'. In addition, we have been able to
calculate that 10% of link sites are using the ExpoWorld.net
remote search facility to link to ExpoWorld.net. This allows
for a direct search on ExpoWorld.net from the users own site.
	For more information, please visit:

	ExpoWorld.net Speaking Engagements

ExpoWorld.net is scheduled to deliver seminars at two leading
event industry meetings during the Spring of 1999. The topic of
"Event Industry Web Directories and How to Mine their Potential"
will be presented to the ADME/PCMA Annual Conference in Orlando
in January and to UNLV Convention Expo Summit in February. For

Avatars '98 3D online conference Post Show Report
	****************************************************************

On November 21, 1998, Avatars '98 made history as the world's
first 3D online conference to be held fully in cyberspace thanks
to the Contact Consortium, DigitalSpace Corporation, Active
Worlds Software and hundreds of volunteers from around the
world. ExpoWorld.net was active in Avatars '98 as a media
	sponsor.

During its 24 hours online, Avatars '98 managed to assemble over
4,000 attendees and a total of 48 exhibitors. It is estimated
that at any one time over the 24 hour period, there were from
200 to 300 people present in the main exhibition hall while
another 35 physical locations around the world linked into
Avatars '98 gathering a further 1,000 other people.

Educational venues abounded at Avatars '98 where over 30
speakers presented technical papers on the subject of Avatars
and the	future of 3D virtual worlds. Speakers connected to the
conference via web cameras and online audio devices. Another
highlight of the event was the "Avvy Awards", a special session
dedicated to Avatar art where 'avvy-savvy' artists were able to
display their Avatar art and were selected for awards.

As for the exhibit hall, it was in fact no different in concept
than a real-life physical venue. There was an entry lobby and
reception area dubbed "ground zero" where visitors were greeted
by so called "peacekeepers". The latter fulfilled the role of
traditional exhibit hall security guards and hosts guiding
guests to their respective areas of interest. There was also
a virtual exhibit and conference directory placed strategically
at various locations throughout the show floor used to help
provide orientation for visitors in much the same way as
traditional show guides serve visitors at physical events.

As far as representation from the events industry and large
traditional exhibiting organizations is concerned, the following
notable	names were present (listed alphabetically):

	Boeing Company

	Compaq Computer

	ExpoWorld.net

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

	Lake Productions

	NASA Ames Research Center

	Orange County Convention Center

In all the ExpoWorld.net experience at Avatars '98 was extremely
positive. We worked our booth for a few hours and can attribute
about 100 new website visitors and 10 new newsletter subscribers
directly to our participation in the event. Also, ExpoWorld.net
media sponsorship of Avatars '98 earned us mention in leading
technology magazines and online publications such as 'Wired
News', all of which has incalculable farther reaching positive
	implications.

Above all, though, Avatars '98 made it possible for us to
connect with leaders worldwide in the field of technology. We
were able to cement long-lasting relationships with persons with
whom it would have been much more difficult to connect before
the advent of such advanced technology.

In conclusion, it would likely be rather hasty to conclude that
3D online virtual conferences will replace physical ones. Rather
the success of Avatars '98 demonstrates that 3D online
conferences may in fact represent a helpful element to event
organizers in adding a new dimension to their existing events.
Event organizers might now be able to use advanced 3D
technologies to plan for much broader global events including a
much larger market segment than would otherwise be possible
due to the traditional constraints of physical proximity, and
at greatly reduced costs (reduced by 90% by some estimates).

We close this article offering a list of relative reference
links to archived Avatars '98 content and invite the events
community to work with ExpoWorld.net and the Contact Consortium
on further exploring the possibilities for development of real
world applications for 3D online events. We thank the Contact
Consortium and Avatars '98 for offering our industry a new
paradigm of opportunity to contemplate as we continually enrich
our industry by debating traditional and potential future event
	models.
